An annual exam is a preventative exam performed by your primary care physician. It is essential for your long-term health and provides an opportunity to detect potential health issues early on and obtain necessary preventive screenings, depending on your age, lifestyle, and gender.
Many people only see their doctor when they feel sick, but preventive care is the key to long-term health. The majority of chronic medical conditions I have diagnosed have been discovered during an annual physical examination.
During your annual physical, the doctor will assess your overall health, including lifestyle and risk factors. This typically includes a review of medical history, family history, medications, and lifestyle habits. Your vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight, and height, are checked. Depending on your age and risk factors, the doctor may order lab work to monitor your health. Some examples include checking cholesterol, blood sugar, thyroid function, complete blood count, and kidney and liver function.
Many serious conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol, develop silently without symptoms, making annual physical exams crucial for detecting these conditions before they become severe. These visits are also a chance to discuss health goals with your physician, such as maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, or managing stress more effectively.
Most insurance plans fully cover one annual physical per year, though it’s always best to confirm coverage with your provider and insurance plan.
